English

We promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and develop their love of literature through the encouragement of reading for pleasure.

We seek for all our pupils:

– to be articulate, and able to express their thoughts confidently, through questioning, describing, clarifying, debating – and collaborating– to read fluently with good understanding, and develop the habit of reading widely and often– to write independently, accurately and creatively, within and across the curriculum.

We aim to help all our children at Beaufort to:

– love English and be motivated to use their developing skills and knowledge to read or write independently and for a purpose

– be exposed to high quality texts and experiences– express their ideas confidently and imaginatively, both orally and in writing (using Standard English)– be confident in speaking and listening and able to elaborate and explain clearly their ideas and use discussion in order to learn– become keen, fluent readers and, as they progress through the school, show a mature comprehension of a wide range of texts– write clearly, accurately and coherently, independently adapting their language and style for a range of purposes and audiences– show a high degree of grammatical accuracy and write effectively across a range of genres for specific purpose– acquire a wide vocabulary and show, in their writing, creativity in ideas and language choices– develop fluent, legible handwriting and accurate spelling and be able to proof read and edit their own work– make good progress, with the majority of children meeting or exceeding national expected levels of attainment

Phonics

In Early Years and Key Stage One, phonics is taught through the Read Write Inc. programme. This teaches children to recognise the 44 sounds and blend them together to read accurately and fluently. They also learn to segment words into their sounds so as to spell. Rigorous assessment ensures that the children’s progress is tracked and carefully monitored. Children are then grouped depending on their needs, which results in good progress. Children experience success from the very beginning.

Reading books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children read, their fluency and confidence in reading increases.

The curriculum used at Beaufort is based on the National Curriculum for English provided by the government. Details for each aspect of our English Curriculum can be seen by clicking on the links below:
